Mary Virginia Walter, born in 1900, exemplified dedication and passion throughout her illustrious career as an educator. Her journey began in the community of Lois, where she walked to and from school starting in first grade. At the age of 18, Mary Virginia embarked on her teaching career in Greenwich, Prince William County. Over the years, she also taught in Nokesville and Southampton County, as well as in Lois, Sumerduck, and Goldvein within Fauquier County, often commuting to work in a horse and buggy.

Mary Virginia Walter's commitment to education was matched by her academic achievements. She earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Virginia. For 52 years, she dedicated herself to teaching, spending 49 years as an elementary teacher and her final three years as an eighth-grade teacher. Throughout her career, Mary Virginia Walter's talents extended beyond the classroom; she was a published poet, an accomplished pianist, and an artist. She directed and produced musical programs, raised chickens, and cherished her beloved dog in her later years.

In recognition of her significant contributions to education and her community, Fauquier County named a new school in Morrisville after her in 1979. Mary Virginia Walter's legacy continues to inspire generations of learners at the school that bears her name.
